INVITED GUEST NOT WELCOME

The Rt. Rev. Marc Andrus, Episcopal Bishop of California and an invited guest for the installation of Archbishop-designate Salvatore Cordileone, was not allowed to be seated.  He was escorted to a basement room at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral and detained by an usher until the time the service began, whereupon Bishop Andrus left the cathedral. More information will be forthcoming as it is available.
Unbelievable.  And on the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the saint who welcomed all and from whom the the diocese takes its name.  What possible reason will Archbishop Cordileone give for this egregious breach of hospitality and lack of grace?  I can't think of any.  What an embarrassing start to his term as archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco.

  1. I can see San Frans RC population going down the tubes in less than 10 years. It'll be like Boston & Baltimore with over 3/4 if it's parishes closed and on the market.

  2. Well it depends on the level the decision was made (it could have been someone low down making a mistake). If regretted, it requires a gesture of goodwill to make amends (e.g., a small dinner between the two bishops). They do agree pretty much on what is justice for undocumented and documented immigrants if not on other major issues. If they can work together on one issue, perhaps the new archbishop will be more amenable to changing his mind on other issues.

    1. If the delay in seating +Marc was a mistake or the result of miscommunication, and an apology is offered, along with a gesture of good will, then the two prelates will go on to work together for good in the future.

    2. PS: Erp, I would be shocked if the new archbishop changed his mind on the issue of gay marriage or gays in the RC church. He follows the strict Vatican line and will continue to do so, IMO.

    3. If Acts is accurate on the matter, I'm sure Peter and James were shocked after Paul made a journey to Damascus.

    4. You make an excellent point, Erp. Shocking things do happen. :-)

  3. Is this story about the Episcopal bishop who arrived late for the installation and left in a huff before an opportunity came where the ushers could bring him in without disrupting the ceremony?
That's pretty rude... arriving late, then leaving before the ceremony is over. Bishop Marc should apologize.

    1. Oh why look, it's Anonymous! Acting as if s/he KNOWS all this because s/he personally witnessed it!

      Give me a break, troll.

I'm willing to allow it ***MAY*** have all been the "misunderstanding" the RC Archdiocesan PR person is claiming it was. But the Truth Will Out, and it's FAR too early to tell yet.

    2. Anonymous, if you comment again, make up a name. I note on my sidebar that anonymous comments may be deleted.

If I had been detained in the basement after everyone else had been seated and after the mass had started, I would have left, too. Think about it. If the purpose of +Marc's detainment was not to disrupt the service, why wait until the mass has started?

  4. The report appears to suggest that a number of guests were asked to wait in the basement and but that all the others were then shown to their seats.

It could have been a misunderstanding of sorts, of course, although you would think that a bishop would be eloquent enough to clarify these.

But it's so much more pleasing to think the worst of everyone and not let any opportunity slip to slag people off - no wonder people who do that prefer to remain Anonymous. Doesn't bear the light of a real name, does it.

    1. Erika, anonymous comments really tick me off, especially the snide comments.

Perhaps we will hear a further explanation that will smooth out relations between the two bishops. I'd guess the notice would not have been posted on the diocesan website, if +Marc did not think something had gone very wrong.

    2. And this is the kind of petty, mean spirited nonsense that believers see their "shepherds" indulging in and throw up their hands in despair ... and walk away from institutions that purport to teach Love of one another and the neighbors but cannot quite practice those teachings ... eeeeegadliness!

    3. What you have here is two bishops on opposite sides of Prop 8, Abp Cordileone as a leader in support of the repeal of the law that allowed same-sex marriage in California, and Bishop Marc, one of the leading opponents of the repeal. My later post gives +Marc's side of the story of his detainment.

    4. I find Anonymous comments far less unpleasant than most people. The minute you read "Anonymous" you already know that it will be an opinion that cannot bear the light of day.
It's quite fascinating that all these anonymouses know this - it belies their supposed ease of conviction.
Once your views or actions have been rubbished by an Anonymous you know you've won.

    5. Erika, I allow one anonymous comment because perhaps the person did not read the note on the sidebar. After that, I delete if it's the same person. And that's another problem with anonymous comments: if there happens to be more than one in the same thread, how does one know whether it's the same person?

Perhaps the anonymous comments annoy me because, as you say, the opinion so often cannot bear the light of day. Anonymous commenters seldom are the bearers of worthwhile news or even sensible opposing views.

  5. And in the meantime Archbishop 0.11% (.03% over the .08% limit)pleaded down to the lesser charge of reckless driving in order to avoid a drunk-driving trial. It would have taken the bloom off the ceremony.

    1. Yes, and the archbishop joked about the DUI at the installation ceremony, which I thought was rather unseemly. He could have apologized and let it go at that. A RC bishop in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, resigned after being cited for DUI. I can't think of his name, or I would verify my memory with a link.

  6. I read somewhere that Cordileone was sent there to make sure that SF knows what the Vatican thinks about the gay issue. Somehow, I doubt that these two men will be taking tea together very often, as +Andrus is sensitive to the needs of the gay community. Maybe the DWI is an outward sign of inner
discomfort at the thought of being sent on such a destructive mission.
I have a daughter who lives in SF, when I told her of the new Archbishop's mission, she laughed and said "nobody will pay ant attention to him." Maybe this is Act I of getting attention? nij

    1. Nij, to appoint one of the leading figures in support of Prop 8, which repealed the law allowing same-sex marriage in California, as archbishop in San Francisco, with is large LGTB population is, I'm quite certain, an in-your-face message about where the RCC stands. See my latest post on Bishop Marc's explanation of what happened at the cathedral.

  8. Nobody cares either way; San Francisco is one of the 10 most secular cities in the US; religion is something nobody takes seriously there except as a chance to dress up and prance around in silk robes. It's the theological equivalent of show tunes; except for the gays (closeted Catholics and open Mainline Protestants)it has virtually no other fans there.
Andrus and Cordileone might as well smack each other with their purses.
